  • That is the same as saying, “1 box of vinyl siding contains 200 square feet.”
• Siding Supplier says, “All vinyl siding is $25 Off per Square.”
  • That is the same as saying, “All vinyl siding is $25 Off per 100 square feet.”
• Vinyl Siding Contractor says, “We pay $100 per Square for Vinyl.”
  • In this context, he’s refering to what they pay thier installers to install vinyl siding.
  • This would be the same as saying, “We pay $100 per 100 square feet for Vinyl” and “We pay $1 per square foot for Vinyl.”

So What is the definition of a “Square” of House Siding?

A “square” is a unit of area measurement used in House Siding (specifically Vinyl Siding) that equals one hundred (100) square feet.

1 Square (of House Siding) = 10 feet X 10 feet = 100 Square Feet.

10′ x 10′ = 100 sq.ft. = 1 Square of Siding

Using the formula above, let’s bring this all together.

Example:  If you have a wall on your house that is 40 feet long by 8 feet high. ( 40′ x 8′ )

So How Many SQUARES is this example wall?

Answer: 40′ x 8′ = 320 sq.ft. = 3.2 Squares of Siding
a.k.a.: 320 ft2 = 320 SqFt = 320 sq.ft. = 320 Ext. SqFt

Now if a product costs $150 per square and you need 3.2 squares, your cost would be $480.00.

$150 per square  x  3.2 squares  =  $480.00

First of all, what is a Top Notch Vinyl Siding Installation?

      4. Very little “exposed” caulking and if it is visible, it’s clean, smooth and neat.
      5. The finished product is clean, dry and pencil mark free.
      6. Everything looks consistent and “like” wood as much as possible.

In conclusion, a “top notch vinyl siding installation” will vary depending on several factors but if the items mentioned her are present – the Vinyl Siding install will most likely be a Top Notch one!

In the 9/30/2010 Good Morning America story about the damage caused by some energy efficient windows, vinyl siding is again showcased in a very poor light.  Albeit this is a very serious issue which we at Siding4u.com have been monitoring for quite some time, it IS however a reasonably rare occurrence.  It still should not be occurring.  HOWEVER… our concern is that media coverage of this phenomenon could deter homeowners from vinyl siding due to some freak occurrences like these.
In the video it does mention “… the extraordinary reflective heat can damage all sorts of surfaces, not just siding …” but the images of melted vinyl siding is what we believe will stick with the prospective siding consumers ~ not words.

Project Details: “We have a split level house (1600 square feet) with a 360 square foot family room addition. Presently all cedar shake with many problems; soffets,leaders and gutters need to be replaced. The house is very poorly insulated so we want to properly insulate at the same time that we redo the siding.

There are two small windows in the dining room that need to be replaced as they are rotting on the outside. There is a large bow window in the front that is wood framed on the outside that we would like to have vinyl wrapped rather than replaced. All of the windows probably need to be rewrapped with vinyl.

All contractors being asked to bid will be required to give us 3 referrals, preferably in the general area of Metuchen/Edison so that we can speak with owners and see the work. So our preference is to only get quotes from local contractors who we know will be around if there is any problem or concern in the future.

I would like to emphasize that we need a contractor who can do the insulation work needed so that we can get the $1500 rebate that is available until the end of this year.

Typically vinyl siding needs to be cleaned once per year to keep your siding looking great.
The video below shows you some basics on cleaning your vinyl siding with a pressure washer AND gives some great tips.

If you have melted your vinyl siding by placing a barbeque too close to your house don’t feel bad… it’s pretty common. Most reputable siding contractors should give you the BBQ and weed eater talk.

The video below actually has a lot of really good information and “visually” shows you the process of replacing damaged vinyl siding.  We’d like to add that most vinyl siding expands and contracts 1/4 inch per 12 feet and that is the “typical” minimum amount of movement the vinyl siding panel is required to have.

…well here’s what the experts do…

Rule #1) Allow For Movement!

I can’t stress this enough, you must allow vinyl siding to move BECAUSE it typically expands and contracts 1/4″ (one quarter inch) per 12′ (twelve feet).  If you don’t allow vinyl siding to move it will most likely buckle and warp under the pressure.
So MAKE SURE the vinyl siding can slide back and forth at least 1/4″ in all areas.

Rule #2) Caulk Any Holes.

If you drill a hole through vinyl siding, caulk the hole up with clear silicon or color matched caulking.

Rule #3) Use Vinyl Siding Mounting Accessories if Possible.

There are several vinyl siding accessories designed for attaching things to vinyl siding.  The most common are called J-Blocks and they are typically used to mount lights to a wall with vinyl siding on it.  Check with your vinyl siding supplier to find out what accessories are available for your specific type of vinyl siding.
You can also do a search like this one “vinyl siding mounting” to find after market solutions.

For Custom Solutions

You can remove the vinyl siding (you’ll need a Vinyl Siding Removal Tool), mount your item directly to the wall, make sure to compensate for possible moisture and water considerations, install J-channel around the item and re-install your vinyl siding.  This is typically what is done for items that can not be removed from the wall or other custom applications.

Vinyl Siding TIP) Keep Extra Siding On Hand!

It is a very good idea to keep extra vinyl siding on hand.  You never know when you might need a piece or two for a repair.
